Kalamaki Villa Calliope is one of the three villas set higher up the hillside of this small estate; it looks out over the trees and terracotta tiled roof of villa Erato, below. This property is larger than the two 60 sq m villas, which have just one bathroom. Calliope enjoys larger rooms and an extra en suite bathroom to the double-bedded room.
The villa has one double and one twin bedroom, each with air conditioning and with mountain or sea views. The living room, which opens via French windows on to the large, covered sea-facing terrace, has an extra sofa bed for a child and a 26” flat-screen TV. The kitchen area comes with full cooker, toaster, coffee maker, microwave, washing machine, and fridge/freezer. Both bathrooms, one of which is en suite to the double bedded room, have a full bath with shower. All windows and sliding doors are fully mozzie-netted.
The covered terrace overlooks the private pool, with the sea and mountains beyond. Complimentary BBQ, DVD and CD facilities available on request.
The general area and what to do...
The Kalamaki Villas are located on a small private hillside estate, set within a larger forested area. From the estate, there are panoramic sea views (enjoyed from all the villas) across the huge Gulf of Messinia, culminating in the 2,400m Taygetos mountain range beyond, in the east. The hillside is about 300 feet above sea level; it’s an easy 5-10 minute drive to the nearest seaside villages of Petalidi and Chrani which have a choice of tavernas and small shops (Petalidi in particular is known for its fish restaurants).
Sunrises are spectacular, as the mountains are often snow-clad until surprisingly late in the year, and keen photographers and artists alike will enjoy the challenges of capturing sparkling water with bright blue skies and the many different light patterns created.
The nine individual villas are all quite private, each with its own swimming pool and set within mature, semi-wild gardens. They offer considerable flexibility for parties of all sizes. Two people in one villa will be as comfortable as a family of six in another, a group of friends occupying two nearby villas or a party of 40 holidaymakers occupying the whole estate. The properties are an easy walk from each other, and are located on three different levels on the hillside.
The estate offers the perfect adventure playground for children; there are no cars except those parked by fellow guests alongside their villas. Virgin woodland and scented Mediterranean maquis surround the properties, giving free range to children’s imagination and creativity. Wild tortoises and the occasional rabbit or badger can be spotted by those interested in nature, and in spring there are wonderful wild flowers, starting with anenomes in February/March. Wild iris and cyclamen follow, and plentiful bird life can be seen and heard across the estate.
Cultural sites worth visiting for day trips abound – this is the Peloponnese region of Greece, where many say that civilisation as we know it today began. There is Koroni Castle, just 17 km along the coast from the Kalamaki Villas, dating from the 13th century and, close by, Methoni Castle – both Venetian. One of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, Voidokilia, is slightly further away (51 km), close to the ancient port of Pylos, along with Nestor’s Palace (a well-preserved Mycenean site mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey).
Relaxing, reading, walking, swimming, exploring and good food are key components of a wonderful villa holiday to Greece. Juicy tomatoes grown locally taste of sunshine; lemons can be picked from trees in the grounds of the estate, oranges for squeezing can be purchased from local roadside farm stalls just feet from where they were grown, and cucumbers and salads are fresh and good value from local shops. Barbeques, whether meat or fresh fish, are an easy way to cater for family and friends – BBQ equipment is provided with each villa - and local shops sell octopus in vinegar, taramosalata and many other starters and nibbles that go extraordinarily well with an early evening G&T or an ouzo or two…
