For centuries, fishing has breathed life into the remote shores of Northern Norway. The nutrient rich waters of the Norwegian and Barent Seas, warmed by the gulf stream, are home to immense numbers of fish – saithe, redfish, wolfish, cod and halibut – and during the winter months attract migrating shoals of cod and herring. As darkness envelops the Tromso archipelago and the crisp snow settles on the ground, the surrounding waters welcome a couple of new guests; migrating pods of orca and humpback whales. On our three-night break to Tromso we are offering you the chance to get up close to these magnificent cetaceans on a whale watching safari, with the first operator in the world to be recognised for their environmental practices with a Blue Flag. Our best-selling, and most highly praised, dog-sled tour and a small group Northern Lights excursion are also included. We feel that this tour represents the best that Northern Norway has to offer.

The illumination of the Northern Lights occurs when charged solar particles collide with atoms and molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere. Green bursts of light are most commonly witnessed; these are collisions with oxygen atoms 100-200km above the surface of the Earth. Blue colours are collisions with nitrogen atoms at the same distance, whilst oxygen atoms glow red when excited by the solar particles. Our seven night itinerary combines Tromso, considered one of the best places in the world to see the natural phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis; the Swedish mountain resort of Bjorkliden and the world-famous ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjarvi, all destinations are above the Arctic Circle and situated under the Aurora oval.
