Spring wildflowers
March is a particularly enchanting time across many regions of Europe, as it marks the true beginning of spring and, more specifically, the peak season for a spectacular display of wildflowers.
On the Gargano Peninsula in Puglia, Italy, the bloom is particularly spectacular. This 'spur' of the Italian 'boot' is internationally recognised for its exceptional botanical diversity, and spring sees the emergence of thousands of flowering plants. The region is especially noted for its astonishing variety of wild orchids, with dozens of species adding delicate beauty to the verdant hillsides. Alongside them, clusters of sweet-scented hyacinths and bright cushions of alyssums create a breathtaking floral spectacle across the limestone terrain.
Further south and west, along the coastlines of Portugal's Algarve and Alentejo regions, the spring air is heavy with the scent of blooming succulents and herbs. The dramatic cliffs and rugged hillsides are softened by the majestic flowering of agave. Their towering, asparagus-like stalks crowned with clusters of creamy-yellow blossoms stand in stark contrast to the deep blue of the Atlantic.
Meanwhile, the rugged, sun-drenched landscapes of Cyprus become a riot of colour. In the rural areas, native flora flourishes following the winter rains. A vivid, low-growing carpet is formed by the deep crimson of red poppy anemone, the cheerful yellow of sorrel, and the silvery-green, aromatic foliage of rosemary speckled with its pale blue flowers. These vibrant displays create an unforgettable sight for anyone exploring the island's countryside during the spring months.
