Get in touchThe mountainous region of Minas Gerais or “General Mines” was the centre of the world’s original gold rush. During the 18th century, 80% of the world gold was mined here and people flocked to the area from all over Brazil and Portugal to make their fortunes. Beautiful mining towns sprang up all over the region, all with exquisite churches built in the Baroque style and adorned with gold.
The most famous of these towns is Ouro Preto (Black gold) which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This stunning town, perched on a hillside contains the best examples of Baroque architecture in Brazil. It is also the site of Brazil’s most famous rebellion, the “Inconfedencia Mineria”, which failed and saw its ringleader, Tiradentes, hung, drawn and quartered. He is Brazil’s most famous martyr. Minas Gerais is also famous throughout Brazil for its food. Fresh ingredients and generous portions proves its reputation is well founded.
