Introduction

This region is undoubtedly one of Sunvil’s all time favourites! Located on the Osa Peninsula, Corcovado has earned a reputation for some of the nation’s best wildlife viewing. Furthermore, due to its remote location, it benefits from being less frequented by visitors compared to other parts of Costa Rica.

It includes thirteen separate ecosystems, almost 1000 species of trees and nearly four hundred species of birds. Corcovado has been called ‘the most biologically intense place on earth’ by no less an authority than the National Geographic Society. Here, amongst the largest trees of Costa Rica, can be found the densest population of tapirs, jaguars, monkeys, bats, toucans and scarlet macaws. It should be noted that cats are a very rare sight in Costa Rica due to the dense vegetation.

Offshore lies Caño Island, an ancient Indian burial ground, offering beautiful, white sandy beaches sheltered by coconut palms and excellent snorkelling opportunities among coral reefs where dolphins and whales can sometimes be seen. Drake Bay is located on the northern Pacific coast of the Osa Peninusla and serves as another good base from which to explore the Corcovado National Park and Caño Island Marine Reserve.

Caño Island

Visible from Drake Bay and quite stunning at sunset is Caño Island, part of a Marine reserve which covers approximately 5,800 hectares of ocean. Here a diver can explore the coral beds and rock formations with a good chance of seeing all kinds of marine life such as spiny lobsters, octopus, porpoises and sea cucumber. If you stay on the surface, however, you will not be disappointed with the white sandy beach that awaits the visitor and which also provides an excellent location for a picnic lunch and a swim.

Rose Hill

Rose has been visiting Latin America for over two decades (first visit to the continent was in 1998) where she had many adventures as a single 30 something getting lost in Patagonia! It didn't put her off as she returned with her toddler daughter for 6 months in 2005 whilst working for an adventure trekking and riding outfit in the Torres del Paine National Park, Chile.
