Overview

Introduction

This delightful national park was created in 1993 and has 35,000 acres of tropical rainforest and mangroves.  The area was being exploited for wood products, but has been steadily purchased with help from the Austrian government and private interests, notably the classical Austrian violinist Michael Schnitzler.  The land has been subsequently donated to the Costa Rican government.  It is tucked away in the south-west corner of the country across the bay from the Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park.  Together they form and safeguard an important and ecologically diverse corridor in the Golfo Dulce.  It protects some of the last remaining stretches of undisturbed lowland primary rainforest.

Due to its humidity and hot climate, the park gets plenty of rain keeping it lush and verdant all year long.  There are hundreds of rare plants, animal, insect and bird species found in this evergreen forest.  Some of the more common animals and birds found here include; the howler monkey, the white-nose capuchin monkey, coatis, toucans and Scarlet Macaws.  The park only has limited trails and the two rivers complicate things even further.  Therefore access through the majority of the park by foot is rather challenging.  We recommend boat trips and kayaking in order to maximise your enjoyment.

There are flights from San Jose to either Golfito or Puerto Jimenez.  From either airstrip it is approximately 35 minutes by boat to the lodge of your choice.

It is a nature-lover’s paradise. I love the fact that 25% of its land is protected by national parks and reserves. Seeing a puma or a vivid flash of morpho butterflies in Corcovado is a real thrill! Rafting a river is a must!
