Overview

Introduction

The town is set on a cliff top in the Loma de Ubeda about 5km from the right bank of the Guadalquivir River. It is 327km south of Madrid. Granada is 132km south and Malaga 241km further to the south.

Under the Romans, the town was known as Beatia. The Visigoths followed but it was under Islamic rule that Baeza came to prominence and the town had a population then of 50,000 compared to today’s 16,000. Under the Christian kings from 1500 onwards there was a further economic revival thanks to the red dye produced from cochineal. It was at this time, though Moorish influence in the buildings was always there, that the cathedral, churches and private palaces were built in the fashionable Italian style.

The economy collapsed once more in the 17th century. However Baeza still has some very fine public buildings and possesses some of the best-preserved examples of Italian Renaissance architecture in Spain. In 2003, the town as a whole was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Baeza - Complements Ubeda and to go to one without visiting the other is unheard of. Baeza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site like its companion, boasts incredible heritage but a favourite of mine is the Plaza de Pópulo, a picturesque square surrounded by historic buildings and 'Fuente de los Leones' - a fountain with four ornamental lions, as its centrepiece.
