Arrive at Bari airport, collect your hire car and drive to the Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita Hotel in Matera (74km / 75 minutes).

Day 2 - Day at leisure
Time to explore the marvellous city of Matera, one of the most interesting, unusual and memorable destinations in Italy. Set on the steep-sided Gravina Gorge in the remote southern region of Basilicata is a place famed, above all, for its extensive cave-dwelling district, the sassi. Take a guided electric Tuk-Tuk ride around the ancient city and marvel and the fabulous viewpoints en route.

Day 3 - Drive to Locorotondo
After breakfast, drive to Locorotondo (84km /1½ hours) and check-in at Il Palmento. Surrounded by a picturesque, rural landscape brimming with colourful wild flowers, weathered olive trees and rolling hills covered with impressive vineyards, the property is made up of traditional trulli houses with thick, white stone walls and characterful conical roofs.

Day 4 - Day at leisure
Time to visit Alberobello (15km), inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, and home to more than a thousand trulli houses (whitewashed, conical shaped buildings built centuries ago as homes and tool stores, and typical to this region). In the afternoon head to Polignano a Mare, a pretty, medieval coastal town facing the Adriatic Sea with an historic centre, the remains of a Roman bridge, small town beach and a former cathedral which includes works by the sculptor Stefano of Putignano.

Day 5 - Drive to Martano
After breakfast, drive to Martano (130km /1½ hours) and check-in at the Naturalis Bio Resort & Spa. Located in southern Puglia between Lecce (25 minutes’ drive) and Otranto (20-minutes), this fabulous organic farmstead has an old Masseria that has been beautifully restored to provide a high standard of accommodation. It is surrounded by several citrus orchards (oranges, clementines and lemons), olive groves, herb gardens, wheat fields and a small vineyard where they produce their own Negroamaro wine and even aloe plants, used to produce the Naturalis organic health product range.
