There’s nothing quite like the sense of adventure you feel when embracing the freedom of the open road. Fly-drive holidays provide you with the opportunity to discover a country at your own pace, in your own time, whilst taking comfort in the fact that the route is already mapped out and accommodation booked. Our latest blog details five of our most scenic and desirable drives in Greece, Patagonia, Portugal, Cyprus and Norway.

The scenic south – a fly drive tour of the southern Peloponnese

Greece is known to offer many scenic routes for travelling. However, we believe one of the best areas to drive around is the southern Peloponnese; which is why we have created a one-week fly-drive itinerary that features not only stunning scenery, but also historical sites and a pair of fortified towns. On this trip, you will meander through winding roads from Kalamata to Mystras, Monemvasia, Mani and picturesque Kardamili. Make sure you have your camera at the ready to stop and capture fantastic images of Alpine vistas, UNESCO World Heritage sites and the dazzling deep blue sea.

Explore natural wonders of the world on a Patagonia self-drive holiday

The breath-taking Patagonian region is ideal for a scenic fly-drive holiday and certainly one which you will not forget. Begin your journey at the sophisticated capital of Santiago and fly into the heart of Patagonia, to Punta Arenas, where you can collect your hire car. From here, make your way into the awe-inspiring Torres del Paine National Park, via the charming town of Puerto Natales. After a while exploring, perhaps after a hike or two, you’ll get back into your car and cross the border into Argentina. El Calafate will be your destination, a perfect base to explore the likes of the Perito Moreno glacier, undoubtedly one of the wonders of the world. You can also visit the Chalten region, a hiker’s paradise where two of the world’s most spectacular peaks can be seen (Fitz-Roy and Cerro Torre).

A journey through the central and northern region of Portugal

Undulating hills, river valleys lined with vineyards, natural parks and historic cities are just some of the attractions on offer during a fly-drive holiday to central and northern regions of Portugal. We suggest starting your voyage from Porto, the main city in the central region of Portugal. From here, drive to Viseu, described as the ‘heart of the country’ and little known to tourists. Viseu has many wonderful surroundings and we highly recommend visiting the fascinating city of Coimbra, the coastal town of Averio and the Serra de Estrela Natural Park.

Make a leisurely day out of transferring 192km north, which will eventually bring you to Amares. Stop en route at Lamego and the town of Amarante; a charming medieval town that has inspired many artists and writers, with their work presented at the municipal museum. In the neighbourhood there are also Romanesque churches, pretty mountain villages and plenty of hiking and cycling trails to be had. Finally, finish your trip at the Pousada of Geres at Canicada before driving back to Porto airport for your return flight to the UK.

Discover the west coast of Cyprus

Explore Cyprus’s west coast on a one-week fly-drive trip, from the stunning national park of the Akamas to the traditional foothills of the Paphos mountains. Begin your holiday at Paphos Town and discover its rich history and Blue Flag beaches. We suggest visiting the Hellenistic and Roman city of Curium, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Palea Paphos and Aphrodite's Temple. After a few days sightseeing, continue your journey to the border of Akamas National Park - a perfect base from which to explore this area. There are several circular trails to follow in Akamas and the villages of Droushia, Neo Chorio, Kathikas and Arodes are within a short drive. Latchi and its tiny fishing harbour, with a selection of restaurants and an uncrowded beach is just a few kilometres away; a perfect place to end your holiday.

A scenic drive in Northern Norway

Norway’s 18 Scenic Routes (which used to be named National Tourist Routes) include drives which cover most of the country, boasting roadside stops that could fill an entire architecture journal. Our 14-night itinerary incorporates three of our most favourite and picturesque routes: the Lofoten, Andoya and Senja. Highlights include a drive past deep fjords, beaches, mountainsides, nature reserves, idyllic hamlets, a boat trip, and days at leisure where you are free to explore natural playgrounds, an abundance of wildlife, museums and picture postcard villages. Read more about Norway’s Scenic Routes here.

Having been at university and unsure as to what to do following some temporary jobs, Dudley joined the family firm as a brochure packer in 1979. In those days distribution was from the office premises and Sunvil was just beginning to grow again, following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the company’s major destination, in 1974. He was then made responsible for travel agency sales. In due course he took over the running and brochure writing for the Sunvil Greece programme and the contracting of accommodation. He is now a director of the company and is the most knowledgeable and experienced member of the Greek team. He mixes work in administering the programme with taking reservations and he particularly enjoys tackling complicated and well nigh impossible itineraries.
