For the eighth consecutive year we were planning to go to Chrani in the southern Peloponnese and after our June trip was cancelled we had everything crossed that our August trip, with the whole immediate family, would go ahead, and it did!
In the two weeks prior to our holiday we were immensely grateful for the reassurance we received from the Sunvil team via helpful emails and videos.
Completing the Passenger Locator Form was no trouble at all, neither was checking in online. The only downside was having to keep our face masks on but the bag drop at Manchester Airport was straightforward and well managed. Going through security was easy and the departure area was quiet with few passengers around compared to previous years.
This was our first flight with EasyJet and we found the plane comfortable with plenty of legroom and we took off bang on time. On arrival at Kalamata we found the airport less crowded than normal and more efficient than usual. We were delighted to see Pauline, our wonderful Sunvil rep who has become a firm friend and we soon found ourselves in an air conditioned mini bus heading to our accommodation.
Our welcome at the Ilaira Apartments in Chrani was as warm as ever and we soon found ourselves slipping in to the Greek lifestyle with an ice cold Mythos and taking in the spectacular views across the sea to the mountains of the Mani peninsula.
Apart from our party of eleven there was only one other British couple at the Ilaira. However, this meant there were Greek families there enjoying their own summer holidays.
Thankfully face masks only had to be worn when entering the local shops and although the staff at the tavernas and in the only bar in the village wore them we didn’t have to. The tavernas seemed less busy than usual but as ever we received a warm welcome from the local businesses and we were thanked on more than one occasion for being there.
The whole holiday was enjoyed by us all from the oldest at 72 to the youngest at 3. We made the most of the lovely beach which is just below the apartments. We swam in the sea and the pool and ate some amazing Greek food. We even celebrated our granddaughter’s 18th birthday with all the guests at the Ilaira, the owners Panayiotis, Yianna, Dimitris and Vicky and our rep Pauline who sourced and delivered a wonderful birthday cake.
We are so glad we got our holiday this year. The atmosphere and the warm and genuine welcome we received were the same as ever and nothing was affected or spoilt by the coronavirus situation. We have already booked our next holiday there next year and already we can’t wait. This part of the Peloponnese is like a magnet to us and we shall be returning as often as we can.
Occupying a prime location directly above the main part of Chrani beach, the popular Ilaira Apartments offer good standards, a peaceful location, great views and a swimming pool. Steps lead directly down to the beach below, where you will find free sunbeds and umbrellas for Ilaira guests. Chrani’s handful of small shops and restaurants are all within a ten minute walk.
