Where to go on holiday in May

Immerse yourself in the local culture on your May holiday. In Norway’s Hardangerfjord the fruit trees are in bloom. Backed by snow-capped mountains and the glistening waterway, the scene is one worthy of many pictures. Fjord cruises, glacial hiking and visits to the waterfalls of Voringsfossen and Steindalsfossen can be incorporated into any holiday to the region. It is Norway’s National Day on 17 May and across the country children’s parades, marching bands and concerts take place. This is an opportunity for friends and family to get together, many of whom will wear their national costume.

In Sweden the rape fields of Skane, the southernmost county, add a yellow glow to countryside and, when contrasting with the quintessential red farm houses and blue skies, create a welcoming scene. Skane is renowned as the breadbasket of Sweden and the local gastronomy alone makes this region a delight to visit - then add the 400km of sandy beaches and the medieval towns and you have a diverse and pleasing combination.

In the Azores, May is the month of festivals. The highlight of the festival calendar is the Festas do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres which involves processions, musical performances and floral instillations. Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel is our preferred setting for experiencing this event.

The Larnaca flower parade also takes place this month at Finikoudes beach. The event incorporates a procession of floats adorned with flowers, followed by a programme of entertainment with music and dances.

Chris is the Sunvil Group’s managing director and is not only responsible for the overall running of the company, the welfare of its staff, the fabric of the building, the efficient working of its computer systems but also for overseeing and contracting much of the accommodation on the GIC The Villa Collection programme. He is a very hands on managing director, a friend and helper to all, mad on aircraft and indefatigable. Chris joined The Greek Islands Club in 1993, after two years running a scouts’ holiday camp in Wales. He was responsible for maintaining The Club’s sailing boats on Paxos and generally acting as a rep for the villas. Sunvil Inherited Chris on purchasing GIC in 1998 and his abilities were quickly realised. He well deserves the top job.
