Dominating the hilltop of Santa Catalina, with panoramic views over the city below, is the Parador of Jaén. The interior of the Parador is grand, with vaulted ceilings in the dining room and lounge. Guest rooms vary in size and some have a four poster bed. The Parador is 5km from the centre of Jaén with its old quarter, of which the highlights include the Cathedral ‘Nuestra Señora de la Asunción’, the Arab baths and the San Lorenzo Arch.

Adjacent to the property are the ruins of the castle of St Catalina, once a Moorish fortress before being transformed under the power of Ferdinand of Castille. A stone pathway leads you from the castle to a large cross, which is claimed to be the site where the captain of one of Ferdinand III’s troops embedded his sword in the ground, in victory, after seizing back Jaén from the Moors. There is a great view over Jaén and its cathedral from this viewpoint.
