Holidays to Plasencia

With a population of around 45,000 people, Plasencia is a walled medieval market town (founded in 1186) on the banks of the River Jerte.  Its strategic position on the commercial/pilgrimage Silver Route (Ruta de la Plata) led to many nobles moving to the city who generated enormous wealth as witnessed in the grandiose buildings in the old quarter.
 
The Romans and then the Moors occupied Plasencia until the 12th century when King Alfonso VIII reconquered the city for the Christians.  Parts of the walls and some great towers and gates still remain. In the old quarter, religious buildings and ancestral homes in Muslim, Romanesque, Renaissance and Gothic architectural styles merge to create a unique mix which should not be missed.
 
The Parador is set within an old convent where visitors can enjoy some of the best food in Plasencia surrounded by the impressive ancient walls.
 
You should also try some of the products from the lands surrounding the city, like mushrooms, pickled vegetables, trout and suckling lamb, Iberian Ham from the Extremaduran pastures, cheeses and the legendary cherries of Jerte valley.
