Introduction

Known as one of the best places to live in Brazil, Florianopolis is the capital city of Santa Caterina state and island. At the heart of the city is the charming historic area with the legendary fig tree which promises good fortune and long life to those who follow the custom of walking around this 100 year old tree three times!


Close by, the vibrant public market provides a colourful sight for visitors and an array of the regions specialities including ‘sequencia de camarão’ (shrimps in sequence).
Oysters are the local delicacies and enjoyed with Champagne. Most oysters served in Brazil come from Riberão da Ilha, the first community founded by the Azorean settlers in Santa Caterina.

Each year, usually between June and November, the Southern coast of Santa Caterina welcomes the arrival of the Southern Right Whales migrating from the Antarctic winter to warmer waters.  Trips are arranged for visitors to view this magnificent sight!

Florianopolis is located within a short flight from Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires; many visitors take a look at Florianopolis before setting off for one of the 42 beaches on the island.

Just 50 minutes by road is the private, secluded peninsula and home to Ponta dos Ganchos, a wonderful and exclusive resort to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
