At an altitude of 7,000 feet, Trogon Lodge is located in the bird watching paradise of San Gerardo de Dota, an area of the cloud forest home to hundreds of different species.
Situated just 2 hours southeast of San Jose, tiny San Gerardo de Dota is reached via a narrow, twisting mountain road that leads to the valley floor of the Savegre Valley.
Surrounded by mountains and forest, this pleasant lodge is surrounded by flower filled gardens and trees. Accommodation is simple but comfortable and the standard rooms are located throughout the gardens, divided into 12 modules of 2 rooms each. Some rooms are closer to the restaurant and main facilities, while others are deeper in the forest. The superior room is located atop a small hill, offering a wonderful view of the valley and the lodge, as well as complete privacy.
The "El Quetzal' restaurant serves family style meals. For those that wish to catch their dinner and have the chef prepare it, there is a trout pond on the grounds of the restaurant where guests can fish. Besides fresh seafood, the restaurant also serves local produce and preserves.
This is an excellent destination for exploring nature and birdwatching. There are three hiking trails on the grounds of the lodge, and the lodge is only 5.5 miles from Los Quetzales National Park which covers 12,355 acres of three different types of forest, including cloud forest. You can also arrange day trips to the Savegre River for fishing expeditions. Various bird watching tours and walking tours are available (at an additional cost) on a daily basis lead by in-house naturalist guides.
