Many independent reviews claim that this is the best hotel in Hvar Town. It certainly is rather special and many visitors return every year. The hotel is small and early booking is essential; it sells out very fast.
The hotel is four star and it is unique. It is one of the best spots in Hvar Town, it remains authentic, it is small and intimate with just 15 suites-rooms and the family that owns it is involved in all aspects of the hotel running. Many of the staff have been employed for some years.
Rooms are called suites, not in the luxurious sense (although we think they are very stylish), but due to the amount of space provided by one bedroom and a lounge area. Forget white plastic and so on, this is more traditional furniture, individual chairs, mostly in a cream-ivory theme with touches of light wood. There is a wonderful feeling of space.
One journalist wrote “entering my hotel room was like stepping into a boudoir of cream brocade and silk with the Adriatic perfume wafting in through the windows and oh, what a view!”
The hotel is tucked into a prime spot in the centre of town, on a narrow street that leads down to the waterfront and the “the mandrac”, the Croatian word for an inner harbour with mooring for small boats. This is the spot for a wide choice of boat trips and water taxis over to the Pakleni islands for beaches (pebble and manmade), swimming with agreed return time if required.
Just a few minutes’ walk to the main square with 16th century St Stephen’s Cathedral and the 17th century Venetian arsenal (now a museum) and the same to a wide choice of bars, restaurants and shops.
There are some 35 wide and easy (not steep) steps leading from the narrow street to the hotel entrance and some further steps at the hotel (two floors). Located in a pedestrianised area so there is no traffic noise – the whole of the centre of Hvar Town is traffic-free.
There is an excellent a la carte restaurant which has a delightful outside, flower filled terrace. Breakfast, a la carte meals and half board dinner are served here and at the inside section.
Below the hotel and with a large open terrace onto the street, a rather special café-bar serves snacks and drinks from early until late. The name is Bar Central Club and there is live music usually nightly from mid-June until mid-September. The band plays inside and we have never heard of complaints through noise. This is cool, live music from traditional jazz, through Blues to Springsteen type covers and holds great appeal to people over 45 and feels a million miles away from the Hvar clubbing scene for younger people in other parts of town and predominantly during July and August.
Locals have been coming here for years so it must be good!
Regarding beaches, a small pebble one in front of the Franciscan monastery beyond the catamaran stop is about 10 minutes stroll away and a wider choice of beaches is in the other direction around 12-15 minutes stroll if the idea of a quick water taxi to the tiny Pakleni islands doesn’t appeal.
