In a wonderful location on the seafront at the Eastern end of Korcula Town with wonderful views from the terrace and sea facing rooms to the open sea and the silver-grey peak of the mountain on the Peljesac peninsula.
Literally a few minutes’ walk to the historic plaza with churches and the town museum and indeed to Marco Polo’s house.
This famous writer and traveller (1245-1324) was first a merchant and is best known for his trading exploits when he travelled the Silk Route in the Far East.
The location of his birth has been much debated and continues to this day. When he was born in 1245, the island of Korcula was part of the Venetian Republic so there are indeed various ways of looking at this.
Whatever is the truth, the name “DePolo” is an old island name and islanders mostly believe that he was born in Korcula Town. Today, both his home with imposing bell tower and the museum “House of Marco Polo” can be visited.
The other distinct feature of Korcula is the famous “Moreska” traditional sword dance. It involves a “fight” between the Red and Black knights using swords. As with most cultural dance forms, the boys start learning at a young age (real swords are used and precision is key) and during their normal day they work as teachers, drivers, hairdressers and more. The two sides of battling dancers were originally Moors and Christians recalling the Spanish battles of the Reconquista in the Middle Ages.
From May to October, it is performed weekly on one of the many outdoor arenas in Korcula Town and it really is not to be missed.
Korcula Heritage Hotel still oozes a touch of glamour with its rich fabrics, extravagant art works and glittering chandeliers. Fifty years ago, film stars and celebrities including Sophia Loren, Wallis Simpson and Jackie Kennedy were regularly spotted here.
Today it attracts visitors from all over the world, people who want to stay in a small, boutique hotel with unique architecture which really has a place in the life of modern-day visitors and residents alike. Returning visitors speak of the pleasure of an authentic experience in a hotel of belle epoque charm yet beloved and used by locals.
It’s a great base from which to explore other parts of the island, either in a rental car or by local bus.
Just minutes away are water taxi stops which transport visitors to tiny islands for a day of swimming and sunbathing, Similarly, the foot passenger boat stops just in front of the hotel and this crosses the water to Orebic on the mainland in just seven minutes and which has some of the best pebble beaches in the area.
