Overview

Introduction

This is the sixth largest of the Croatian islands, with almost 200 coves and beaches, a few of them sandy and it’s also a favourite as a twin centre holiday choice with famous Dubrovnik, a couple of hours ride away by fast catamaran direct into Korcula Town. You can also connect the two by an interesting drive across the rich Peljesac peninsula, if coming from Dubrovnik, then a 15-minute ferry crossing from Orebic.

If coming from the Split area, it means a historic drive across the brand new and impressive Peljesac bridge across the sea that opened in July 2022, connecting mainland Croatia with the Peljesac peninsula.

The island is famous for olive and wine production with white wines especially prominent. Two names to look out for are Posip and Grk and tours of the mainly family-owned wineries are possible.

Lovers of red wine should take the seven-minute passenger boat crossing (early June-late September) over to the mainland village of Orebic and continue to some award winning, family run vineyards and winemakers producing mainly the heady red Dingac and Plavac Mali wines.

Korcula Town is known for three things: the fascinating herringbone pattern of narrow streets ensuring cooling breezes in hot summers, the amazing Moreska Sword Dance and the alleged birthplace of explorer and traveller Marco Polo.

Designed with a nod to Dubrovnik, Korcula Town is enclosed by stone walls (cocktail bar on an old fortress, anyone?) and is utterly charming. Despite the place being busy in July and August, there is still a gentle time-warp feel to it. May, June, September and early October are wonderful times to visit as the crowds are not there and the sea and air temperature are usually warm and inviting.

Water taxi services take visitors to nearby tiny islands including Badija with its Franciscan monastery and pretty beaches, perfect for a picnic, put together from the town’s fresh open market (daily from 0600-11). There is also a hop-on-hop off islands service with details available at the water taxi points.

Did you Know?

  • Many islanders swear that Marco Polo was born here in 1254 and that the name “de Polo” remains strong on the island. The Venetians are not amused since they say that MP was born in Venice and that there are records to prove it. This runs and runs…
  • Boys start training at the age of four or five to participate in the unique Moreska sword dance fight, thought to have originated from passing Moors as they travelled across Korcula and modern-day southern Europe
  • There are catamaran services from both Split and Dubrovnik together with the islands of Brac, Mljet and Hvar meaning many possibilities for multi-centre holidays
  • The book “Eastern Approaches” by Sir Fitzroy Maclean is based on his time on Korcula during World War 2 under instruction from Sir Winston Churchill. He was the first foreigner allowed to buy a house under the then President Tito with whom he forged a strong bond. The Maclean family still have the house to this day and the family occasionally visits.
