Overview

Introduction

The park is named after the Krka river and actually includes two-thirds of the river. It covers just over 142 square hectares.

The waterfalls are spectacular and Skradinski Buk with its collection of 17 waterfalls is the most famous aspect of the park. These blue cascades tumble down over limestone sediment resulting in pools in a semi-submerged forest. From 2021 swimming in the lakes became prohibited due to damage to the fragile ecosystem from human bodies in water (perfume, hair products, deodorant etc). The Krka River itself is usually a deep turquoise blue.

Paths are well marked and there are over 800 species of plant life and over 200 species of birds.

Electric boats take visitors across various parts of water and to the tiny island of Visovac where monks settled and constructed a monastery in 1445.

Did you know?

  • Krka National Park is smaller than Plitvice. You can do everything in half a day but a full day means a more leisure experience
  • There is an authentic ethno-village within Krka National Park, built around the original watermills dating from the 17th century
  • Krka National Park is only 10 kms inland from Sibenik on the coast
  • There are excellent wineries in the area open for visits
  • The famous Sokolarski Centre is around a minute's drive away.
