Alkyon Syros Hotel

Tucked away on a quiet hillside overlooking the Aegean on Syros’ untouristic south coast, this small family-run hotel ticks all the classic Greek hotel boxes.

Operating since 1990, and still run by the same hospitable Franco-Greek family, the Alkyon is one of those special places where you can escape the stresses of modern life; a true Greek oasis in a peaceful rural setting with an ethos of simple authenticity.

The Alkyon has 24 traditionally-styled rooms. Measuring 17 sq m, all possess twin or double beds, shower room and balcony with views over the gardens, pool, mountains and/or sea (please note that preferred views are on request). In-room amenities include WiFi, A/C, ceiling fan, mini-fridge, room-safe, TV and hairdryer. Rooms are for maximum 2 persons but some can interconnect to create a Family Room for up to 4 persons.

Mature Mediterranean gardens surround the impressively large 25m x 13m swimming pool, accessed by Roman steps as well as by ladder (depth 1.0m to 2.80m) and served by a low-key pool bar. On the terrace above with views to the sea is the hotel’s restaurant offering breakfast, light salad lunches and evening meals. Elsewhere in the grounds is a tennis court (free to use, equipment can be supplied).

The owners and staff are a mine of local information and do their utmost to help all their guests get the most out of their stay. Please note that the hotel cats in the garden are a part of the family too!

It is a 3 minute walk down to the main road (not steep) where you will find a bus stop for further island exploration. Ermoupolis, Syros’ historic and elegant capital, is 11 kms distant, about a 25 minute bus ride, and other beaches and villages can also be easily reached. Megas Gialos village is 1600m away (c 25 minutes walk) which has a lovely sandy beach and a taverna - two other tavernas can be found en route (10 and 15 mins walk respectively). A number of small shingle coves are also within a 10 to 15 minute walk.
