Overview

Introduction

Lesvos, also called Mytilini, is the third largest island in Greece after Crete and Evia. It lies in the north-eastern Aegean close to Turkish shores, and offers such variety that whatever you seek from a holiday you should be able to find here.

The island is lent its distinctive identity by a mix of olive, oak and pine forests to the east, a more rugged terrain to the west (betraying Lesvos' volcanic past) and a rolling idyllic rural landscape in between. It is an island that has hung onto its strong traditions - not only as seen in the largely unchanged way of life in the hill villages but also in terms of the Arts. Legend has it that Orpheus' lyre was washed ashore here (the locals who found it dedicating a temple to music and poetry nearby); Aesop was born here; and Lesvos is 'where burning Sappho loved and sung' (Byron) - it has been the home of artists, poets and writers ever since.

The best beaches are mainly to the west - wide strands of fine shingle and pebble that can stretch for miles. Elsewhere there are mountain villages, historic monasteries, mediaeval castles, even Europe's only petrified forest to discover. If you can, visit the archaeological museum in Mytilini Town, the capital. It houses finds from the Neolithic and Bronze ages through to Classical and Roman. The nearby Byzantine museum is also worth a look. More recent history is evidenced by the strong Turkish architectural influence - Ottoman mansions and crumbling minarets can be seen all over the island.

Lesvos is famous for its bird life, especially during the migratory seasons - Skala Kalloni is the best-placed centre for birdwatching - and the sweet song of the nightingale can still be heard on the island.

Thankfully Lesvos does not rely on foreign visitors for its living. (In fact only five percent of the island's income is generated by tourism). This may partly account for the fact that many of our guests have commented on the high standard of authentic Greek cuisine they have found on the island. Olives, ouzo productive, fishing and agriculture are still the priority here. This is an island that has kept its soul, and that's why we believe a visit here will be all the more rewarding.
