In 1893, Norway introduce a regular boat service along its long, dramatic and beautiful coastline. Connecting the south with the north, calling at numerous ports along the way, the service breathed life into fishing communities and provided a vital service for transportation of goods, post and people. This service continues today with daily departures from Bergen, throughout the year, to the town of Kirkenes and back again. A distance of 2,545 nautical miles, 4,716km, is covered and 34 ports visited.
For travellers to Norway, the Coastal Voyage provides access to some of Norway's most remote villages and a vantage point from which to observe the country's ever-changing landscape: fjords give way to island archipelagos, high mountain peaks and the Finnmark plateau; not to mention the midnight sun and Aurora Borealis.
Popular trips include the 11 night Round Voyage (Bergen - Kirkenes - Bergen), the 6 night Voyage North (Bergen - Kirkenes) and the 5 night Voyage South (Kirkenes - Bergen). At Sunvil, we love the port to port opportunities whereby travellers can embark and disembark at any of the ports of call on a tailor-made trip; cars can even be taken on board where fly-drive itineraries are preferred.
Whichever trip is chosen, long or short, we promise for it to be a feast for the senses. Take a seat on deck and watch the world go by, meet local residents en route, participate in a choice of organised actvities and sample fresh, local and seasonal cuisine on board - afterall these trips are for the people and about the people, their heritage and the promotion of local produce.
