Per Saevik bought his first fishing boat when he was 16 in 1957. With the passing of time, he slowly built an empire of shipping related businesses, operating in shipping technology, offshore, transport and tourism and now Havila Voyages, using the most sustainable cruise ships in the world. The ships can sail through vulnerable fjords for four hours using the world's largest battery pack ever installed on a passenger ship. The batteries are charged with clean onshore hydropower and when the batteries are not being used the ships run on liquid natural gas along with a general hybrid operation which cuts CO2 emissions by 40%.
But it does not stop there. The specially designed hull is used for onboard heating. The menus feature local produce and food waste is cut to a minimum. And the decor, on board and in the cabins is crisp, efficient, relaxing and typically Scandinavian.
The 124 metre long Capella had its maiden voyage in 2021 carrying 640 passengers in 179 cabins. The Castor, Polaris and Pollux have subsequently followed. These are coastal ships of the future.
WiFi is free and all cabins and suites, sleeping two to four persons, have USB ports, television and a wardrobe. Cabin size (most have sea view) varies from 10 to 45 square metres.“You can view the Northern Lights and the midnight sun while seated in a comfortable lounge chair under the glass roof. Or perhaps you’d prefer to enjoy the views from a jacuzzi that is heated from surplus heat.”
Havila is still family owned and at 80 years old, Per Saevik is still the chairman!
