The magnitude of earth’s magnetic pull is undeniable in Longyearbyen. Here, people from all corners of the earth are drawn to work and live, each one holding a deep passion for the archipelago they call home and its ever-changing landscape, which bears witness to the power of both man and nature.
Historically, and still to this day, Longyearbyen is considered the gateway to the greater Svalbard archipelago and to the north pole. It is, however, so much more and in the opinion of the Sunvil team, Longyearbyen deserves to be considered a destination in its own right; one where even the longest stay will leave you yearning to return and experience more - a different season, wider exploration and more experiences.
In the Svalbard Hotell Polfareren we have found a modern, welcoming and convenient base from which to explore Longyearbyen and its environs. The heart of the hotel is the Restaurant Polfareren serving delicious Nordic cuisine – a popular choice for locals and visitors alike, and the neighbouring lounge with its lofty ceilings, large windows, roaring fireplace (for the colder days) and relaxed ambience. In keeping with Svalbard tradition guests are required to remove their outdoor shoes on entrance and encouraged to relax and unwind – slippers and socks welcome!
The hotel has 49 guest rooms each tastefully decorated and adorned with a large scene depicting life in the high Arctic. For the best experience, we recommend rooms in the main building.
This is a sociable and friendly hotel, located on the town’s main street, a stone’s throw from the town’s shops, post office (be sure to send a postcard from the world’s northernmost post office), a choice of bars and restaurants.
