Cascais, 31 km north from Lisbon (40 minutes’ drive) or 30 minutes by train is a traditional fishing port which has grown into a refined tourist resort while still retaining its charm and character. The pousada is located within the walls of the 16th century castle in the centre of Cascais. The citadel dating from the 15th century, represented the main defence of the Lisbon Coast and the mouth of the River Tagus from the French, English and Arab pirates. In the 19th century it was the summer residence of the Portuguese Royal Family.
