Over the many years that we have visited hotels, Las Casas de la Juderia stands out as the most unusual property we have ever seen. On the edge of the Jewish quarter, which most faithfully conserves the appearance of the city as it was and is now known as the quarter of Santa Cruz, the Duke of Segorbe has converted a former mansion into a hotel. But he did not stop there. Over 30 years he added to the project by converting adjacent Jewish dwellings, 47 in total, to create the most amazing complex of houses, each sensitively renovated to preserve their character into a unique hotel of 175 rooms. He created a mini Jewish quarter, as staying in this hotel, with its labyrinthine, narrow passages, inner, flower filled courtyards and underground tunnels perfectly reflects the 15th century Jewish quarter.
This hotel is not for those with walking difficulties, although there is a lift. As one of our reservations staff commented when he inspected the hotel: “you don't have to go on a walking holiday when you are staying here.” Guests frequently return to reception as they cannot find their room. This is a friendly hotel, full of character, charm and adventure.
