Vejer de la Frontera, atop a hill overlooking the Barbate River is one of the prettiest towns in the countryside surrounding Cadiz. The Moorish influence is everywhere, with its whitewashed houses and narrow winding, labyrinthine streets. Vejer is just the right size with plenty to see and places to visit without being too large and overcrowded.
Vejer is a walled town and some of its towers are still well preserved as are the four medieval town gates. The castle, dating from between the 11th and 16th centuries, rising above the old town is particularly impressive and combines elements of both Muslim and Christian architecture. The town also boasts some fine examples of religious architecture and some very impressive 18th and 19th century civil buildings.
At night the town comes alive and the squares abound with restaurants and cafés. A town to people watch and be watched.
Vejer is only 9km from one of the most famous beaches on the Cadiz coast, the 4km long El Palmar Beach, particularly good for windsurfing.
VEJER DE LA FRONTERA
The town was declared a Historical Site and awarded the National Prize for the Beautification of Andalusian Towns. It is perched on a hilltop overlooking the River Barbate.
The town has many outstanding churches: the Divino Salvador Parish Church which overlooks the town; the Monjas Concepcionistas Church with its stunning Las Monjas Arch; the Hospedería de San Francisco Convent; and, on the outskirts of the town, Nuestra Señora de la Oliva hermitage. The most outstanding civil buildings in the town are the Baroque Palace of the Marquis of Tamarón and the Mayorazgo.
Vejer de la Frontera is only 9km from one of the most famous beaches on the coast of Cadiz, the El Palmar Beach. This beach has more than 4km of fine golden sand beaches and, when the wind blows, provides a great area for windsurfers.
