But the romanticism of the medieval era is not the only reason to visit Soria. The city is the perfect base from which to visit and walk through some of the most spectacular scenery in Spain. Nature

In Western Soria lies the River Lobos Canyon (45 minutes drive from Soria) which stretches for 20 km and declared a Nature Park in 1985. The canyon and the surrounding area is considered to be one of Spain’s most beautiful landscapes and home to roe deer, wild boar, squirrels, otters, badgers and wildcats. There are many signposted trails in the park.

In northern Soria is the Urbion Nature Park with its fascinating group of lakes formed by glacial erosion, and which include the famous Black Lagoon. Mountains tower to 2,228 metres and short-toad and golden eagles circle above.

In the Calatanazor Nature reserve is the picturesque medieval town of Calatanazor with its spectacular castle towering above. Then there are the parks of Acebal de Garagueta, La Fuentona, Sierra de Urbion and Sitio Paleontologico de Cerro Pelado where the first European micro-mammal fossils from the Tertiary Period were found.

This very special area of Spain is relatively unknown yet there is so much to see and is a very important part of any itinerary around Castile and Leon.
