The pretty village of Jarandilla de la Vera, located in the province of Cáceres in Extremadura, is surrounded by attractive countryside and historic sites of interest. The Romans, Visigoths and Moors have all left their mark and can be seen in the cave paintings, settlements, ceramics and bridges throughout the region.
Originally the castle of the Counts of Oropesa, dating from the mid 15th century, the Parador today offers a place to rest and from which to explore. Monumental and historic, its predominant features include a parade ground, turrets, an attractive patio, a spacious Gothic gallery and a distinguished exterior. The architecture of the Parador has changed throughout time but remains as beautiful as ever.
Outside of the Parador, within the region, you will find many religious buildings - churches and convents, some more curious than others such as Nuestra Señora de la Torre which dates from the 12th and 13th centuries and is built on a rock. The Monastery of Yuste, founded in the 15th century and where the Emperor Charles V lived for several months. Jarandilla also boasts many fountains, charming narrow old streets such as Calle Machin, Calle Altozano, Calle La Moraleja and Calle Marina. Nearby, the Jaranda Gorge is ideal for those with a passion for the outdoors.
December 7th sees the town celebrating Los Escobazos (festival of the brooms), in honour of the Virgin Mary. The highlight of the evening is watching the virgin, carried on horseback, making her way through the town whilst its residents fill the streets, carrying burning brooms, lighting up Jarandilla de la Vera with flames of orange – a truly amazing sight!
