Location is everything in cities. To walk out of your hotel and have everything at hand is the ideal. There is no doubt that the Casa de la Lirica scores on all fronts. The Puerta del Sol, the very centre of Madrid, if not of Spain, is 300 or so metres away. The Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia Museums are a 10–15-minute walk. Three metro stations are all within 300 metres and there are shops, restaurants, cafes and bars all around, with the Plaza de Santa Ana, the centre of Madrid nightlife, a 10-minute walk.

Yet, this 83 room 4-star hotel is in a relatively quiet spot. The property has an opera theme centred around the Zarzuelas or Spanish opera; theatrical plays with musical acts. There are photographs of operatic works in all the rooms featuring Spanish opera singers like Placido Domingo. Rooms are furnished very much in the classical, traditional style, with wooden floors and rich fabrics. Bathrooms can be with a bathtub or shower.

The entrance/lobby with its velvety, heavy furniture and marble floors is particularly imposing, being covered by an enormous, multi coloured dome which fills the space with light. Though the hotel does not have a restaurant, this is no hardship as there are many in the surrounding area and the lobby wine bar also serves snacks such as tapas.

A welcoming hotel with helpful staff and a useful base before embarking on a multi-centre holiday exploring the fascinating interior of Spain.
