Funken Lodge (formerly the Spitsbergen Hotel) offers accommodation of the highest standard and some of the best views in Longyearbyen, from its elevated position at the back of the town. Whether looking towards the lofty mountain peaks that form the town’s natural protection, the world’s northernmost church or over the colourful houses that lead down to the fjord, the scene is one to enjoy and which changes, like the seasons, before your eyes.

For us, Funken Lodge is set apart from other hotel offerings in the city due to its rich heritage and connection with the Spitsbergen Coal Company; a history that, even today, can be felt and experienced. Yes, the property is modern but the pictures and artefacts which line the public areas and guest rooms ensure that its 70 year story will never be forgotten.

A highlight is the property’s abundance of public areas, from cosy nooks to spacious libraries and a welcoming bar. The ambience is one of comfort and warmth, with dark woods blending with leather furnishings, woollen throws and scatter cushions. A piece of art by Queen Sonja of Norway forms a focal point. The hotel’s panoramic Funktionærmessen restaurant has justly built a reputation for the quality of its dining experience. Sharing plates, featuring the best Norwegian Ingredients and created with an international flare, are served. The style is reminiscent of leading ‘foodie’ capitals and yet you will be enjoying these intricate dishes only 1300km from the North Pole

Nobody that has ever travelled to Svalbard will easily forget the experience. As an Arctic outpost and the last stop before the North Pole, you are at the edge of a wilderness which cannot be accessed without a guide. Svalbard is a summer break with a difference. This is the land of polar bears, whales and walruses; a place where nature dominates and where the geological transformation of the planet can be observed.

In addition to our land based itineraries on Svalbard, we are introducing a selection of very competitively priced 5 night mini-cruises between mid-May and mid-September aboard the very traditional Hurtigruten MS Serenissima.

Built in 1960 for Hurtigruten, the ship has been renovated several times over the years, lastly in 2019, preserving its classic, ocean liner look but with modern amenities. This is a comfortable, cosy ship and ideal for an Arctic Circle cruise experience. The Serenissima has a capacity for 103 guests, with a length of 87.5 metres, a beam of 13.4 metres, a gross tonnage of 2,549 and a speed of 13 knots. There is an expansive observation deck, ideal for soaking up the Midnight Sun or a leisurely stroll, offering 360-degree views of the ocean and the surrounding glacier-carved and weather-beaten landscape. From the observation deck one can descend to the front deck which includes an open-air bar.

The Andrea and Harald Jarl Lounges offer ample space to relax and unwind after a day exploring the wonders of Svalbard and the Venice Restaurant focuses on great flavours, fresh ingredients and great views from all the tables.
