The Alentejo and Centro, two of Portugal’s lesser known regions, are the perfect partners, both unspoiled and unfazed by time. Our 7-night itinerary visits the historic university city of Évora before heading northwards, on quiet roads immersed in nature, to the Serra da Estrela National Park and onwards to the Atlantic coastline. It is on this journey that you will discover the real Portugal, a land overflowing with remarkable scenery, lofty mountain ranges, medieval towns, sleepy coastal villages and historic sites.

Day 1 - Day of arrival
On arrival at Lisbon airport, collect your hire car and drive to the M’Ar de Ar Muralhas Hotel in Évora (c.1½ hours).
Take an afternoon stroll along the maze of cobbled streets, and maybe enjoy a complimentary wine tasting at the Gabinete da Rotas dos Vinhos do Alentejo. The city of Évora has an abundance of excellent restaurants and all are within walking distance of your hotel. We particularly recommend the Il Fialho and Dom Joaquim restaurants for their delicious traditional Alentejo dishes and a great ambience.

Day 2 - Evora
Day at leisure. Évora is best experienced on foot, with old palaces, churches and fountains to be admired. There is also an abundance of shops selling traditional goods and homemade souvenirs including cork products and local delicacies – try the cured ham, sheep cheese, olives and oils, you will not be disappointed.

Day 3 - Day at leisure
Opportunity to explore further a field. In particular we would recommend following a ‘wine route’ of the Alentejo. At most wine estates you receive a tour of the vineyard, the winery and cellars often led by the family of the property themselves. It is a great way to learn more about the region and to meet the local people. Alternatively, towns and cities of historical importance can be found in abundance in the area. Estremoz, Monsaraz, Beja, Vila Viçosa and Arraiolos are all with 1-hour’s drive of Evora. For those who wish to explore the region without the car, bicycle and kayak tours can be arranged locally.

Day 4 - Manteigas
After breakfast, drive to Manteigas (c.4 hours drive), and check-in at Casa das Penhas Douradas Design Hotel and Spa. With the Serra da Estrela National Park as its backdrop, the property and its location are ideal for nature lovers and for those simply wanting to submerge themselves in tranquillity. Manteigas is renowned for its 100% pure wool ‘Burel’ which is the oldest handmade woven wool in Portugal. Wall coverings made from Burel can be found around the world and the old wool factory has been lovingly restored by Isabel and João, owners of the Casa das Penhas Douradas Design Hotel and Spa.

Day 5 - Serra da Estrela National Park
Day at leisure. Criss-crossing the Serra da Estrela National Park are some 200km of walking trails, many of which run from the Casa das Penhas Douradas. The park is home to the highest point in mainland Portugal at 1993m, so today why not take a picnic (payable locally) and head off for a day of exploration? Mountain bikes and kayaks are also available for guests to use. Historic villages and castles are plentiful in the region and not to be missed. Belmonte (43km) with its 13th century castle and Jewish quarter; Monsanto (121km), balanced on an impressive rocky outcrop between colossal boulders; and Sortelha (62km), an old village made of stone are all worthy of a visit.

It is also just a short drive from the Atlantic coastline with its glorious stretches of sandy beaches and the São Jacinto nature reserve.
