Day 2 - Day of Exploring
Today, explore the town of Beja, a pretty town of grand buildings and pleasant plazas. Its claim to fame is a series of passionate love letters written by a nun in the 17th century - plus the town's famous convent sweets. Portuguese nuns and monks produced some of the country's best-known sweets to use up leftover egg yolks (the whites, it is believed, were to starch nuns' habits).

Day 6 - Day at leisure
We would recommend taking the winding road (13km) which leads from Castelo de Vide to Marvão, the highest town in Portugal. Surrounded by a medieval wall, Marvão stands at 860m above sea level, quietly keeping watch across the Alentejo plain towards Spain. A 13th century castle and church, whitewashed houses and steep narrow lanes all add to the medieval atmosphere that Marvão generates.
