It is very easy to forget that rising behind the Costa Brava are the mountains of the Pyrenees.
The drive from Calella de Palafrugell on the coast to Setcases in the high Pyrenees takes just under 2 hours and in between are a host of other attractions like the medieval villages of Besalu, Santa Pau, Pals, Peratallada and Beget, the city of Girona, the Volcanic Natural Park of Garrotxa and the Camprodon Valley - to name but a few of the attractions of this region.
The itinerary we have planned is designed to give a flavour of what the Costa Brava and the Girona Pyrenees offer to the traveller. The region boasts 2,000 restaurants, 13 of which own a total of 18 Michelin stars between them. The cuisine is notable throughout, let alone the wineries and the range of cold meats and cheeses. This is one of the world’s major wine and food destinations.
The Girona region is set against a backdrop favoured by nature, a place where the sea, the plains and the mountains meet.

Day 1 - Day of arrival
On arrival at Girona Airport collect your hire car. The drive from Girona Airport to Setcases will take approximately one and a half hours (104 KM). The drive itself is very much part of the holiday as the route traverses some dramatic scenery in the Garrotxa Natural Park and then through the foothills, mountains and valleys of the Pyrenees.
The Hotel La Coma is a quintessential, cosy alpine lodge with plenty of wood and stone in evidence in the decor. The surrounding views are magnificent, the family run hotel homely and the food (you are on half board here) very much home cooking using the ingredients of the area.

Day 2 - Setcases
The Hotel La Coma is the ideal base for mountain walks and there are several waymarked. Those who love mountains will know exactly what to do and how to spend their time. The hotel has a small spa, ideal after tiring mountain walks and a beautifully located outdoor swimming pool (May to September).

Day 5 - Santa Pau
The drive from Setcases to the medieval village of Santa Pau will take in the region of one and a quarter hour. It is only 39 miles away but the roads are winding.
It is worth stopping in Olot for lunch on the way and once at the Cal Sastre Hotel - and you won’t find a more characterful hotel - spend the afternoon exploring this small medieval village and admire the views from the walls. You will not be able to park near the hotel but there is a car park two hundred yards away on the outskirts of the village and you will have to carry your luggage to the hotel, so park light for your stay here.
It is imperative that you eat at the hotel’s restaurant on both nights because it is the best in the area so it is pointless going anywhere else! The restaurant has a cult following amongst Barcelona football players and Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City manager, is a frequent visitor.

Day 6 - Santa Pau
Santa Pau is right in the middle of the Park Natural de la Zona Volcanica De La Garrotxa, a natural park of 50 dormant volcanoes which last erupted 11,500 years ago and 20 lava flows. It’s a fascinating, lush area of forests surrounded by mountains. A must visit is to the beech tree forest of La Fageda d’en Jorda which is one of the 20 natural reserves of the Natural Park and stands on the lava flow from the Croscat volcano.
If you can ride a bicycle and preferably an electric bicycle, then leave the car and explore the area by bike.

Day 7 - Besalu
Girona is an hour’s drive (45 km) away. On the way it is imperative that you spend a few hours exploring the medieval town of Besalu, with its 11th century bridge across the river Fluvia. At one time as rich as Girona or Barcelona, this is a living town with 2,500 inhabitants and some imposing buildings and a very interesting medieval Jewish quarter.
The Hotel Peninsular 1853 is located right in the centre of Girona and stepping out of the hotel everything is at hand. Venture out to wander through the cobbled streets, people watch in one of the many cafes (some excellent pastries and chocolates) and frequent one of the many good restaurants. The city has 3 Michelin starred restaurants, the very famous El Celler de Can Roca, The Massana and the Divinum.

Day 8 - Girona
Included in the price of the itinerary is a private half day (approximately 3 hours) walking tour of the city. A good guide brings a city to life and Girona, in particular, has a fascinating history. The Jewish quarter, dating from 982 is one of the best preserved in the world, with its maze of narrow cobbled streets. Tiny, interesting shops abound. Girona cathedral is magnificent and the city’s buildings range from Roman, Carolingian, Moorish, Gothic, Baroque and Modernist. Several picturesque bridges cross the Onyar River which runs through the centre of the city. This city teems with student life as Girona University, dating from 1446, is embedded in the old city and enrols about 12,000 students.
