This three-star, simple hotel is unique because it is situated immediately next to the east wall of Diocletian’s Palace – it is actually within the palace limits which form the core of the old city. Both the Palace and the old core are UNESCO heritage sites.
Hotel Peristil takes its name from the Roman “Peristil” which was a kind of continuous porch made of a row of columns surrounding the perimeter of a building or courtyard. The purpose was to provide privacy within crowded cities. We can only assume that Roman Emperor Diocletian favoured this since he had it built here at his retirement palace in Split! Step out of the Hotel Peristil and there in front are indeed columns, statues and Split’s famous polished white stone pavements.
This is a hotel which will appeal to travellers who like to be in the centre of things (even in the centre of a former Roman emperor’s palace) , who like the buzz of being at the heart of things, the ease of strolling around discovering historic gems (and secret squares) at every turn. It will not appeal to those who dislike the sound of everyday life around.
This is the perfect spot for wandering out to explore Split, to have coffee on the Riva promenade or in any of the little hidden courtyards, or to catch a ferry or catamaran to one of the islands – even if just for the day.
The hotel has four floors (ground floor with Reception and the restaurant, plus three floors where the rooms are located) As there is no lift, the staff aim to provide assistance with bags.
Rooms have traditional and quite stylish decoration for a three star property.
Anyone who stays in this spot cannot fail to miss the amazing feeling of having slept within the walls of a former Roman Emperor’s palace!
It is important to remember that cars are not allowed into Split old city. If using a transfer, the vehicle will drop you as close as possible to the eastern wall entrance from where there will probably be a five-minute walk – with your bags.
Hotel Peristil is not recommended for visitors using a self-drive car on a multi-centre holiday since parking is challenging anywhere near to the old town.
