Overview

Introduction

The most famous and most visited attraction in Croatia. More people from abroad visit Plitvice Lakes each year than anywhere else in Croatia.

This outstanding national park is a UNESCO listed world natural heritage site with 16 terraced lakes joined by waterfalls that extend into a limestone canyon along some eight kilometres. The whole area is almost 300 square hectares in size and is essentially a forest reserve.

Cascading waterfalls create a patchwork of various shades of blue – from turquoise to sapphire. The colour of the water in the lakes changes constantly depending on recent rainfall and sometimes it is more blue green and others a deeper blue.

There are boardwalk type walkways and normal hiking trails with a choice of programmes-routes, the shortest 2-3 hours, middle range of 3-4 and 4-6 hours and the longest of 6-8 hours.

Electric boats convey visitors across some of the lakes and there are small shuttle buses to move people to various points - depending on which route is chosen.

Important information

  • There are no facilities at the park for persons with mobility challenges and wheelchairs cannot navigate the walkways
  • International groups are often seen rushing round Plitvice at speed and some of these just stay for 90 minutes, seeing only a fraction of the park. We strongly advise against this and would recommend spending at least one day at the park as an absolute minimum.
  • It is important to follow instructions (such as not feeding fish in lakes) and rangers patrol the park, they provide advice and often speak several languages.

Did you know?

  • Plitvice Lakes National Park is located in the Lika-Senj region of Croatia. This area is famous for delicious creamy (and hard) sharp home made cheese and delicious rustic type of cuisine using local produce and homemade breads.
  • There are a number of restaurants, cafes and snack bars at the park. Local restaurants serve excellent typical regional cuisine, distinctly different.
  • The word “slap” means “waterfall” in Croatian and you will see it on signposts.
  • Often Plitvice Lakes look completely different in winter, sometimes like a magical, frosted wonderland if there has been snow. Some visitors see images of this and return in winter for a few days, often combining this with a visit to Zagreb during the famous Advent Fair in December. Year-round flights from London to Zagreb, flight time, 2 hours.
