Overview

Introduction

The southeast of the island was traditionally a flat, agricultural area with very fertile, red soil. Potatoes are grown here and are much prized. The villages in this area measured their wealth by the size of their agricultural holdings and paid little attention to the coast which was of little use when growing things!

However, this is where the island’s finest sandy beaches are and with the coming of mass, coastal tourism, the lives of the farmers who thought they owned worthless beach-side land were suddenly transformed and millions were made. Nissi Beach and Konnos Bay are recognised for their crystal clear, shallow waters, ideal for young families.

Ayia Napa and Protaras are the main tourist areas and Ayia Napa nightlife is said to rival the likes of Ibiza. Here, you will find beach clubs and the Waterworld waterpark. Protaras presents a more gentle, quieter feel and has more family appeal. The coastline is highly developed and dominated by tourist developments and hotels.

The main town in this region is Larnaca, a quieter, more traditional city with its long seaside promenade, yacht marina and sailing history, salt lake, the church of St Lazarus and the sacred islamic shrine of Umm Haram.

Located at the southeastern tip is Cape Greco National Park. Here are dramatic sea caves and rugged cliffs. An excellent area for hiking and cycling.

Noel Josephides

Noel is Sunvil’s Chairman. Born in Cyprus in 1948, he joined John der Parthog at Sunvil in 1973. Before that and following university, he spent 3 years as a trainee buyer at C&A Modes and then worked for a large Cypriot builder and property developer for whom he set up a London Office buying electrical components for the Middle East and importing lemons from orchards in Cyprus. He still researches new destinations for Sunvil and is heavily involved in matters relating to the travel industry. He is a previous chairman of ABTA, a long standing director and previous chairman of The Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) and former chairman of The Travel Foundation - the travel industry’s sustainability charity.
