Over our 55-year history, we have visited many luxury hotels and villas - but nothing quite like Secret Bay.
It is difficult to know where, or how, to begin in trying to communicate what this property has achieved in, quite literally, being synonymous with what the delightful island of Dominica represents.
Secret Bay is Dominica's crown jewel. Yes, it’s a six-star resort experience, and one of only eight properties in the entire Caribbean to be members of Relais & Chateaux - but in no way is it snobbish, or a place where the guest might feel that the hotel in which they are staying is above his or her station. This is a wonderfully warm and friendly place, somewhere you’ll be well looked after, and it simply – and very quickly - becomes your delightful home on this magical island.
The accolades achieved by Secret Bay are numerous - from Condé Nast to Fodor – but, just to quote one accolade, Travel + Leisure has ranked the Secret Bay Resort (no less than four times in the past five years) as the best of the best in the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Bahamas.
Set on the coastline, where lush forest meets the Caribbean Sea, Secret Bay occupies some 40-plus acres of a serene, cliff-top promontory; Secret Bay is, quite literally, immersed within nature and the sheer, tropical paradise that is Dominica.
There are 22 luxury – and very private – villas, their huge wooden doors open to the warm breezes, with modest ‘backyard’ style gardens around each property. Built entirely from sustainably-sourced tropical hardwoods, the villas were developed to the very high standards of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), with the specific aim of protecting the local environment. All villas offer the ultimate in spacious, indoor-outdoor living spaces, and each enjoys a private plunge pool. To quote what the property owners proudly proclaim: “Secret Bay balances, in beautiful equilibrium, both responsibility to the environment and a commitment to guest comfort, allowing guests to revel in what we call ethical luxury.” It is quite a claim, but one with which you would be hard pressed to disagree.
Part of the luxury of staying at Secret Bay is the fresh, sustainable cuisine that you’ll enjoy during your holiday. Whether you prefer to dine in-villa, at the Bwa Denn restaurant (with its Caribbean-inspired art strikingly displayed, at various levels, across the high wooden walls), or in the estate’s gardens for the Chef’s Table experience, each meal is carefully prepared by the Executive Chef. The fresh, vibrant ingredients - either foraged from the resort’s Botanical & Organic Garden, or sourced from local fishermen and farmers’ markets - are magically transformed. This is garden-to-fork, 100% sustainable food at its pinnacle, in terms of both taste and visual appeal.
Secret Bay enjoys two beaches within its capacious setting. Guests can request a golf cart to take them from their villa to the main beach, Tibay. It takes between one and four minutes to arrive at the beach, depending on the location of one’s villa, and there are no steps to navigate. .
The other cove, the aptly-named Secret Beach, is accessible only by swimming or kayaking from Tibay Beach. Picnic baskets can be arranged for guests on Secret Beach
At the beach there is complimentary access to paddle boards, kayaks, snorkelling gear and GoPro cameras.
Full breakfast in the restaurant is included in the bed and breakfast rate as well as an organic breakfast basket in the villa and a welcome dinner. An Indian River tour is also included.
A word about Secret Bay’s Villa Hosts…
Secret Bay’s Villa Hosts are personally responsible for arranging and delivering guests’ holiday desires. They go far above the typical housekeeping duties that one might expect at a traditional resort. He/she will set a dinner table, should guests prefer to dine at their villa, also lighting candles and serving meals and drinks. Villa Hosts will schedule spa appointments, arrange transport, by land or sea, and will also book excursions. Guests are provided with a personal iPhone, so that they can contact their Villa Host from anywhere on the island – perfect for last-minute inspiration, or romantic ideas! Maybe a musician strumming gentle melodies on a guitar as they return to their villa… or perhaps a carefully-wrapped gift, positioned gently on a pillow…?
