Short break in Athens

Athens must be one of the most underrated capitals in the world. Many people, when asked what they know about Athens will simply mention the fact that the Acropolis and Parthenon are located there. That's like saying London is only about Buckingham Palace and Tower Bridge! Let Sunvil introduce you to the real Athens, a city steeped in history yet looking towards the future.

3 Nights

Price from £509 per person based on 2-sharing

Return flights to Athens, 3 nights at the Herodion Hotel (Standard room - Bed and Breakfast), return private transfers and a walking tour of Athens

Day
1

On arrival at Athens airport, you will be transferred by private transfer to the Herodion Hotel.

Depending on your arrival time, this may be the opportunity to explore the area around the hotel which is very centrally located below the Acropolis and near the pedestrian area that surrounds all the ancient sites grouped below the Parthenon.

Athens at night, especially in the summer months can be very hot and we would recommend dinner on your first night in the rooftop restaurant of the Herodion Hotel. Not only is the food good, but from here you have one of the best views of the Acropolis which is lit up at night. It’s so close you could almost touch it.

Day
2

Walking tour of Athens The majority of the historical sites, both Greek and Roman are grouped near the centre of the city and, included in your short break, is a walking tour of the main sites. Beginning at 09:45 and ending at 13:00, the tour begins in front of the House of Parliament in Syntagma Square to view the changing of the Evzone Presidential Guards and then continues through the National Gardens to the Zappeion Hall, The Temple of Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch. From here the walk continues through the Plaka area to the Acropolis and the Propylaea, the Temple of Nike and the Parthenon - monuments which remind us of the glory of Ancient Athens. Also included are brief looks at the Athenian Agora, The Observatories, the Hill Of Democracy, the Hill of Mars and Philopappos the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Theatre of Dionysos. Now that the history of the city has begun to make sense, have lunch at the excellent restaurant on the terrace of the brand new and world class Acropolis Museum from where there is an excellent view of the Acropolis. After lunch, continue with the Ancient Athens theme and visit this excellent museum which brings the past to life in a simple and understandable manner.

This will have been an exhausting as well as exhilarating day so why not chose one of our recommended restaurants near the Herodion Hotel.

Day
3

Well, today there is a choice; either more culture or shopping and people watching from the many cafes that abound in the various squares of central Athens. Of course you could do both. Make an early start and visit the Archaeological Museum followed by the more intimate Benaki Museum and then a light lunch at the excellent restaurant at the Benaki with views over Athens. You then have the whole of the afternoon to shop in Ermou Avenue and visit the flea market in Monastiraki, which is especially good on a Sunday.  Here the fake and the tat stand side by side with some truly genuine and interesting shops and the challenge is to discover them.  Monastiraki Square is literally at the far end of Mitropoleos Street from Syntagma Square. Alternatively you could take a trip out of Athens today - there are a wide range of guided tours by coach to choose from, including Delphi, Corinth (with wine tasting) and Cape Sounion. Or a mini-cruise to the three charming Saronic Islands of Aegina, Poros and Hydra. These tours are optional - please enquire for prices.

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to somewhere to eat in the evening, but if you are in Athens over the summer months then choose an open air restaurant or taverna. The buzzing and characterful area of Plaka is a short walk from your hotel and packed with taverna options.

Day
4

After breakfast, to Athens Airport for your return flight home.

If your flight does not leave till late afternoon then you have another day to explore or just relax in the many cafes and pastry shops which abound in the capital.

Athens can be very hot in the summer so why not plan your short break over the winter months. Prices are much cheaper, the city is less crowded and the days are generally bright and sunny. The sample price has been based on the Herodion Hotel, but please feel free to choose one of our other featured hotels if you would like to stay in a three or five star property.  Our hotels have been carefully chosen and are all centrally located.
