St John’s Gate is the southerly entrance to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the medieval town of Rhodes. Since 1522, this gate has been known as the Red Door as so much blood was spilt defending the gate against the Ottoman conquest of Rhodes in 1522.
The hotel stands just inside the gate on the site of an ancient church and next door (and looked after by the owners of the hotel on behalf of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture) is the 550 year old church of St John which can be visited on 3 days of the week.
Lovingly restored and cared for, the owners have fused luxury with simplicity to create a remarkable and intimate hotel of five, very individual suites. Suites are equipped with Frette linen, slippers and bath robes, Coco-Mat mattresses and pillows (menu available), bathtubs and hydromassage shower cabins, a notebook/tablet for guests’ use, Bluetooth speakers, mini-bar, tea and coffee-making facilities, air conditioning, mini safe and free Wifi.
A courtyard with an ancient Mulberry tree surrounded by a small herb garden completes the picture of this exceptional property. Traditional hot and cold breakfasts are a delight and gastronomy dinners can be pre-arranged. This is a home away from home, a wonderful hotel for a few select guests.
The Suites
All Suites have at least two comfortable full-sized sofa-beds in the living room area and can sleep up to 4 or even 5 persons. Some are on two levels, with a wooden sleeping gallery above the living room (open-plan)
The Gulbin Suite is located on the first floor and has an area of 40 square metres with sleeping gallery above the living room. The exquisite sitting room has a very high ceiling and four windows. The bedroom is located on the wooden gallery above. Due to the headboard, colours and lighting, this room is probably the most charming of all. The bathroom has a whirlpool bathtub. The room can accommodate 2 to 4 people.
Irini Suite is located on the first floor and has an area of 52 square metres on two levels. It accommodates 2 to 5 people. The master bedroom is on a spacious mezzanine gallery above the living room and there is a smaller room next door with a single sofa-bed, ideal for relaxing and reading. The living room is on the lower level along with the bathroom, which has a freestanding bathtub and a shower cabin with a hydromassage function.
Orhan Suite is located on the ground floor and comprises two rooms and a spacious bathroom (totalling 45 square metres). It opens onto its own section of the garden, under the century-old mulberry tree, and can accommodate 2 to 4 people. The double bed has a silk canopy and a unique headboard made out of an oak Art Nouveau door. The bathroom is equipped with a freestanding bathtub and a shower cabin with a hydromassage function.
Katina Suite is located on the first floor and has an area of 48 square metres. There is a fireplace in the suite’s living room. The suite has a spectacular double bed and accommodates 2 to 4 people. From the front windows you can see the castle wall and part of the Old Town. The back windows look over the garden. The spacious bathroom has a freestanding bathtub and a shower cabin with a hydro-massage function.
Deniz is the most romantic suite in the hotel. Located on the first floor, Deniz has an area of 52 square metres on two levels and can accommodate 2 to 4 people. The suite’s special feature is the unique covered wooden balcony, the hayat (“life” in Arabic), which overlooks the castle wall and the sea. On the ground floor, other than the hayat, there is also a living room and a small sitting area with large cushions and mattresses. The bedroom, with its romantic, lit headboard, is located on the gallery above (open plan). The bathroom has a whirlpool bathtub.
