The fishing village of Skala Kalloni lies at the head of the vast Kalloni Gulf. It backs a long, wide coarse-sand beach, which shelves gently into the safe shallow warm waters and is excellent for children (adult swimmers may prefer the more open sea at Skala Eressos). Although sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented, the tamarind trees that fringe the beach provide natural shade.
Tavernas line the quay close to the colourful fishing harbour and contribute to the relaxed evening atmosphere. For a nightcap a handful of cafe-bars stay open later.
Bicycle hire is a popular way of getting about as the surrounding countryside is flat, lush and attractive.
Skala Kalloni is a popular centre for birdwatching as it is on a main migratory route - nearby salt marshes ensure a strong twitcher presence, particularly during the spring nesting season. Amateurs can enjoy the sight of the ever present flamingos and the resident pelican - just look out for your flip flops!
Being so centrally located, Skala Kalloni is a perfect base from which to explore. With a car you are a 30-60 minute drive from Mytilini in the east, Molyvos in the north, and the Petrified Forest in the west. Closer to hand is the monastery of Limonas; traces of an ancient Temple of Afrodite; a Paleo-Christian basilica; and a mediaeval bridge.
Skala Kalloni remains, at heart, a working fishing village, with a typical unhurried pace of life. Should you visit towards the end of July you will have the chance to get involved with the sardine festival as 'Kallonis sardelles' are the most famous in Greece.
