Overview

Introduction

Padua or Padova in Italian, with a population of just over 200,000, is one of the wealthiest cities in the very prosperous Veneto region.  At one time this region was one of the poorest in Italy but since the 1960s it has become a centre for commerce and tourism.

Padua is a vibrant city with a population of a little over 200,000.  Reputed to be the oldest city in Italy - founded in 1183 - it is located on the winding Bachiglione River, over which the city has many bridges. Padua is only 25 miles from Venice.  In fact, the city remained under Venetian rule from 1405 until the fall of the Venetian empire in 1797.  To the southwest are the Euganaean Hills. Padua is perfectly situated for visiting Venice and the whole of the  Veneto region with the UNESCO World Heritage Site cities of Verona and Vicenza.

The University of Padua is one of the oldest in Italy and was founded in 1222. Galileo was a lecturer there and the university attracted famous painters and sculptors like Donatello, Giotto and Fra Filippo Lippi who have all left their mark on the city.

The city is criss-crossed by narrow arcaded streets, leading to many beautiful squares (piazze), notably  the Piazza Dei Signori and the Prato Della Valle, one of the largest squares in Europe.  The 13th century Palazzo Della Ragione has one of the largest unsupported roofs in Europe.  The monuments, buildings and churches are too numerous to mention but the jewel is the 14th century Scrovegni chapel, decorated by a series of frescoes by Giotto.

A perfect city to 'people watch', a must is a visit to the 19th century Caffe Pedrocchi, located opposite the ancient university.  Try their famous specialty, a Pedrocchi coffee, the perfect blend of mint and bitter espresso coffee.

Finally, don't forget that Padua was the birthplace of Andrea Palladio in 1508, credited with being one of the most influential figures in the field of architecture.  Take a river cruise from Padua to Venice and view some of the most spectacular villas in Europe.
