This pretty white, neat town has a population of 8,000 and is part of the Sierra de Aracena mountain range. Aracena is 96km from Seville Airport and 171km from Jerez Airport.
The town is topped by a castle and the priory church which were built between the 13th and 15th centuries during the Islamic period. The castle consists of the fortress (Alcazaba) with its watch tower cistern and walls. The castle is not furnished but can be visited. The priory church, the oldest in the town was built by the Knights Templar when Aracena was ceded to them by Castile.
Below the hill on which the castle is built are the Gruta de las Maravillas, one of the most imposing cave systems in Spain. Legend has it that the caves were found by a boy looking for a lost pig and were opened to the public in 1913. The lighting in the caves is particularly effective and brings out the many mineral colours that are to be found there.
A lot goes on in Aracena, though one might not think so and there are restaurants, cafés and tapas bars all offering very good value.
