Grazalema is one of the very picturesque Pueblos Blancos (White Villages) situated in the northeastern part of the province of Cadiz. Situated in a high valley at 800 metres above sea level, in the foothills of the Pinar mountain range (part of the Grazalema Natural Park), Grazalema, during the Muslim rule in the 8th century, was inhabited by Berbers.
Jerez de la Frontera is 83km away and Arcos de la Frontera 50km distance.
The village, with a population of around 2,500 is an excellent base for walking and for exploring the extensive, mountainous Grazalema Natural Park. The steep cobbled streets are immaculate and lined by neat whitewashed houses. Colourful plants are everywhere. The main square, Plaza de España is the focal point of the village and is lined by cafés, bars and restaurants. On the eastern outskirts of the village you will find the municipal swimming pool which is well worth a visit during the summer months as the views from its location are excellent.
In 1485 the village was conquered by Christians and in the 17th century was famous for producing shawls and the cottage industry is still in evidence in one or two local craft shops.
