To the north west of this small, off the beaten track, seaside village, which is 77km (1 hour’s drive) south of Jerez de la Frontera, is Cape Trafalgar and the site of Lord Nelson’s famous naval victory over the Spanish fleet in 1805.
Los Caños de Meca has one of the best series of small cove beaches on the Costa de la Luz. The beaches are backed by 100 foot high white cliffs topped with umbrella pines. This small resort is still quaint, still slightly ‘hippy’ but is one of the favourite haunts of the citizens of Seville (162km). It is definitely informal, a place to relax or to windsurf because it is windy. One could describe it as ‘fashionable’.
The village is at one end of the natural sand dune park of Brena y Marismas del Barbate and there is a 7km walk through the dunes, shaded by umbrella pines and maquis vegetation.
Few places like Los Canos still exist in Spain. There is no development here and you come to eat fresh fish at either our featured hotel La Breña or El Pirata. This is most definitely a laid back resort.
