Introduction

It takes just under one and a half hours to drive from Madrid to Ávila, Spain’s highest provincial capital (1030m) and about 2 hours 20 minutes by train. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage city in 1985, Ávila, with a population of around 60,000 is enclosed within 3 kilometres of medieval walls (11th century), built to repel the Moors.

The sight of the walled city of Ávila is spectacular. Low arched city gates with walkways above, the early Gothic cathedral built into the walls themselves and the numerous palaces create an atmospheric, museum-like quality about the city, lightened by numerous small squares with coffee shops and restaurants. Within the walled city, seemingly little has changed since the 16th century.

Outside the city walls Ávila still has much to offer. The best religious architecture is outside the walls and, of course, this is where the future St Theresa was born in 1515 and spent 20 years in the Carmelite Convent of the Incarnation which can be visited. Easter celebrations are very special in Avila and a visit then highly recommended as is a walk around the walls (entry 5 Euros).

The train station is a 20 minute walk from the centre of the city.

Rosanna is the head of our Discovery Department which covers tailor made holidays to Portugal and the Azores, Italy and Sicily, Scandinavia and the new programme to Spain. She is our longest serving member of staff having joined in 1994 after completing an honours degree in French and Italian and subsequently working for a tour operator in Yorkshire. She is responsible for brochure writing, contracting accommodation, programme costing, computer inputting and generally troubleshoots where necessary. She has global knowledge of our tailor made programme.
