Overview

Introduction

The city of Leon is located in the northwest of Castile and Leon. With a population of around 128,000, it is by far the largest city in the province of Leon and, of course, its capital. Leon is only 2 hours by train to Madrid or 3.5 hours by car.

The city was founded around 30 BC as a Roman encampment. By 910 AD it became the capital of the Kingdom of Leon and played a leading role in the war against the Moors. In 1188 Leon hosted the first Parliament in European history and became the most important city in western Spain. Its prominence declined in the early Middle Ages as power shifted to Burgos.

However, the city has enormous cultural heritage and its Easter processions are renowned. It is also located on the French Way of the Camino de Santiago which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its cathedral (dedicated to Santa Maria de Regla) is the supreme example of French classic Gothic architecture in Spain. The cathedral, God’s house on earth, soars towards the heavens, with flying buttresses galore and its 1,800 square metres of stained glass windows are only second in the world to those of Chartres in France.

Leon also houses the Basilica of San Isidoro, one of the finest examples of Romanesque art. The Convent of San Marcos, the Palace of Los Guzman, the Plaza Mayor (one of many bustling squares), the Casa Botines, built in 1893 to the design of Antonio Gaudi and the stunning 2004, Museum of Contemporary Art should also be visited.

This is a delightful, friendly city, with cafes and restaurants on every corner and in every square and is a ‘must’ on any itinerary.
