Hotel Cal Sastre

Buried in the heart of the medieval centre of Santa Pau is this owner-managed four star hotel with just 8 rooms. It is the owner managers that make a hotel and in this case both Eva and Jesus are real characters, welcoming and full of appreciation for your visit.

The imposing, part ruined 13th century castle of Santa Pau stands across the street. The hotel consists of two small 15th century houses that have been joined and tastefully renovated but obviously a little higgledy piggledy seeing that the original construction was thus. There is a perfect harmony between the whole feel of the hotel and the environment of the old town of Santa Pau.

Entrance to the hotel is through a colonnade into the tiny reception and small breakfast room. You walk through to the rear of the building where there is the small swimming pool which is seemingly fused into the ancient walls and a lovely terrace from which there are views to the modern village and beyond that to the volcanoes of Santa Margarita and Puig de Mar. Each room in this characterful hotel is different and many antiques have been incorporated into the decor.

A few metres along the colonnade is the hotel’s restaurant. Our chairman said that he had his best meal here with an excellent tomato soup, special truffle cannelloni and the region’s very famous beans grown on the fertile volcanic soil. The restaurant and the hotel are favourites of the football players of Barcelona and Pep Guardiola is a frequent visitor.

A perfect base from which to cycle and hike through the rural Garrotxa region and its volcanoes. A day’s hire of an e-bike is included in the holiday price. The hire includes the following services:

• Transport of the bikes from the store to your hotel
• Welcome and presentation as to how the bikes work
• Instructions of bike handling and adjusting of the bike equipment
• Review of maps, GPS tracks and advice if needed, update on weather of the day
• Advice regarding what to see in the area and how to get there
• Helmets/handle bags/repair kit and water bottle

Extra days can be booked as can standard bicycles. Please ask at time of booking.

ACCOMMODATION

• 8 air-conditioned rooms including standard twin, standard double, superior and suites. Due to the age of the buildings each room differs in size and decor but all are charming, warm and inviting. Each is decorated with old restored pieces and fully equipped. The floor of all rooms is made of teak wood and the heating and individualised air conditioning ensure comfort and rest. The bathrooms combine designer faucets with typical Catalan tile floors.

The two Standard Double Rooms accommodate a maximum of 2 people and are located on the 1st floor and 2nd floor (with a sloping ceiling)

Superior Room

Superior Room (24m2) with double bed, bathroom (bath and hair-dryer), complimentary WiFi, telephone, TV, safe deposit box, heating, minibar and view of the 13th century castle. The two Superior Rooms accommodate a maximum of 2 people and are located on the 1st floor (with French balcony) and 2nd floor (without balcony and with a sloping ceiling)

Cal Sastre Suite

Cal Sastre Suite (35m2) with double bed, bathroom (hydromassage shower and hair-dryer), living room area with sofa, complimentary WiFi, telephone, TV, safe deposit box, heating, minibar and view of the swimming pool and towards the Sant Julia mountains and the volcanoes of Santa Margarida and Puig de Mar. The Cal Sastre Suite is located on the 2nd floor, has a sloping ceiling and large windows and accommodates a maximum of 2 adults
