Overview

Introduction

Mendoza is the heartland of Argentine wine cultivation, producing around 80% of the country’s wine in some 1200 wineries. Located 750m-1100m above sea level, its vineyards are irrigated by the waters of the Mendoza River.

The wine is harvested from February to April and the 1st weekend of March sees the grand celebrations of the harvest festival, considered to be the highlight of the year in Mendoza. The Mendozian countryside is surrounded by wineries (known locally as bodegas) where you can sample a large variety or grapes, including the Argentinean specialty, Malbec.

The town is also a popular destination for adventure tourism with rafting and trekking in the Aconcagua Mountain (the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere). The city is also famous for its cultural activities with a number of museums, universities and theatres.

Activities
Mendoza offers a fantastic range of exciting activities for all abilities. All those listed below can be arranged locally. (Check that your insurance covers you for such activities before booking).

  • Cycle to the local vineyards and enjoy a spot of wine tasting.
  • White Water Raft or Kayak on the Rio Mendoza.
  • Climb the breathtaking Aconcagua Mountain, the highest summit outside of the Himalayas.
  • Horse back ride through the Andes.

After all this adventure you can relax in one of the many thermal spas!

Argentina’s contrasts never cease to amaze me. One day you could be walking across the sculpted surface of a vast creaking glacier and the next visiting an evocative Jesuit ruins at San Ignacio in Misiones.
