La Candelaria and Sanctuary of Monserrate

La Candelaria (Bogotá’s historic and colonial barrio) features grand houses of Spanish influence with iron windows, thick wooden doors, balconies and internal patios. The area also includes the Cathedral, Gold museum and Botero museum dedicated to the paintings and sculptures of Colombia’s most famous artist, Fernando Botero. Intriguing murals line the streets. Combine with a cable car ride to the Sanctuary of Monserrate at an altitude of 3,152 metres with stunning panoramic views of the whole city.

Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral

Travel to the north crossing flower plantations used for the cultivation of flowers and roses. This impressive salt Cathedral one of only three such structures in the world (the other two are in Poland) is an underground Roman Catholic church built within the tunnels of a salt mine 200 metres underground. There are 14 small chapels and the central nave houses the main altar with a cross measuring 16m in height. Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes from Bogotá (one-way).

Guatavita lake

This high-rimmed circular lake is located within the forest of Cacique Guatavita and Cuchilla de Penas Blancas. It was a sacred lake and the ritual centre of the Muisca people. It is possible to observe here a good variety of flora and fauna. Hummingbirds and hawks are evident amongst the interesting collection of trees. It is claimed to be the site of the legend of El Dorado. Visit also the nearby colonial style town of Guatavita which was created for locals displaced by the nearby reservoir. Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes from Bogota (one-way).

Andrés Carne de Rés restaurant

This unique steak house restaurant is one of the most legendary in South America. The decor, music, dancing and the characters who work and eat there are to be seen to be believed!  It is a cross between a restaurant, nightclub and circus. An unforgettable experience.
